snowy gully

Almost all the snow we had has gone now, but this was taken in our "gully" a week or so ago.

amazing sunsets

We've had unusually mild weather recently which may account for the beautiful sunsets we have had. This is taken from our deck.

icy tree

We recently had an ice storm, which left the trees looking very pretty.

night before

Here they are with Emily and Robert.

Carter "boys"

The evening before the wedding we had the rehearsal dinner and Polterabend (breaking of china) at our house. Here are the Carter "boys" drinking their schnapps.

special dance

Emily danced with her grandfather, Dennis Carter Sr.

Reception

Here we are at the reception, held in the new part of the Walker Art Center.

Robert's family

Here are the Heins with the bride and groom - Norbert Hein, Rosemarie Hein, Steffi Hein (Robert's sister), Hanni Hein, Aunt Uschi Ertel, and Robert's cousin Andreas Ertel.

Grandparents

Here are Emily and Robert with Emily's grandfather Dennis Carter Sr. and Robert's grandmother Hanni Hein. Bryony's father and Robert's other grandmother were unable to be there unfortunately.

Carters

Here are the Carters present at the wedding - we were so happy to have our nephew Luke there as well as Barry's father and brother.

handsome group

Here are the groomsmen too - what a good-looking group! From left they are Adam, Ben, Andreas, Mario, and Mirko.

beautiful bridesmaids

The bridesmaids looked lovely in their velvet skirts, Indian shawls, and silver fibula pins (lovingly made by the GEMS). From left the girls are Katie, Heather, Stephanie, Steffi, and Maja.

formal portraits

Formal portraits were taken after the ceremony - mostly organised by Em (since Bryony dropped the ball with not finding her list of photos and getting distracted by signing necessities etc!).

we did it!

Emily and Robert felt happy that all went so well.

spring flowers

The spring flowers lining the walkway were just beautiful too.

recessional

Leaving the main part of the Conservatory to wait a few minutes before returning for photographs.

which hand?

There was a little confusion regarding which hand Robert's ring should go on!

ceremony

The ceremony was conducted by Bill Oyler in both English and German. It was a very meaningful and emotional ceremony, written by both Emily and Robert with some help from family members for the homily (mostly Robert's mother).

down the "aisle"

Here they come! This is the walkway leading to the main area with the Frank Gehry fish in the Cowles Conservatory. Adam is holding the train because Heather was playing the harp for Emily to come in to.

beautiful morning

Yesterday when I got up the sky was even more beautiful than this - it had begun to lighten and fade even in the time it took to get my camera!

Love

Here is the famous LOVE sculpture in the same area.

Night water

Here's the same area at night.

book or chair?

I've been unsuccessful in finding the sculptor's name for this piece, but will persevere!

Waterblocks

In Shinjuku, Tokyo, in an area near the Hilton and the I-land building, is a really cool water feature - lovely during daylight or at night.

Watery leaf

Emily (with her exceptional Photoshop skills) helped me "find" the tip of this leaf, which had floated out of the picture!

Handsome guys

Emily - you will recognize most of these handsome guys! By the way Eric will be in Kiel for three months I think across Christmas, working with Wolfgang. He may contact you for a guided tour of Berlin!

blue flowers

I don't know the name of these blue flowers but there were a lot in the gardens. They had lupin-like flowers.

dragonfly

In the Botanical Gardens (a nice cool oasis of shade and greenery) there were a lot of red-tailed dragonflies.

modern Sapporo

I don't know the name of this reflected building, but it shows that Sapporo has many modern buildings.

Government reflections

I was taken with reflections and water on this trip! This is the Old Government Building in Sapporo, reflected in the pond in the lovely garden nearby.

more sky

Each evening was different. It was so lovely to see mountains all around.

Sapporo sky

We were recently in Sapporo, Japan, for a big microscopy conference. The view from our hotel window was wonderful, especially in the late afternoon.

sunset

I was driving on the way home and could see the most amazing sunset in my rear view mirror - unfortunately by the time I pulled over for the shot it was past its prime (and I didn't see the wires in the way) but here 'tis.

cactus bones

When the cactus dies eventually its bones are exposed.

hanging fruit

Since they have had little rain this year, there were no desert flowers to see, but there was beauty in the offspring of the hanging fruit cholla.

stone bridge

We thought the scenery in this park was amazing, including this natural stone archway.

scale

Classic bad photo in that it appears the cactus is growing out of Barry's hat, but it does give an idea of scale!
